ABSTRACT

Studies on the application of service-learning with an emphasis on heritage learners are still emerging. Using a critical service-learning approach, I describe how the integration of a service-learning project showed heritage learners of Spanish the need for people with their bilingual abilities. Specifically, I examine the impact of service-learning and critical language pedagogies on students' perception and appreciation (or lack thereof) of their linguistic abilities. A qualitative analysis of self-reported answers to a biographical questionnaire and a final guided reflection, revealed that heritage learners not only gained confidence in their linguistic skills but also advanced their knowledge of the language and cultures while challenging and disrupting inequities that exist in a Latinx community. This study contributes to an emerging literature on the application of critical service-learning approaches to service-learning in heritage language learners' courses by showing the benefits and challenges of incorporating a project that sought mutual benefits for all stakeholders involved. It also contributes to documenting ways to create access to service-learning during the pandemic and how service-learning projects can be incorporated in courses offered virtually only. ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: The main objective of this study is to analyse the one-year mortality in patients with intracapsular hip fracture who were admitted during severe social confinement in the first months of the COVID-19 lockdown and compare it with previous years. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective observational study in which a cohort from March 14 to June 21, 2020 (pandemic group, n=62) was compared with a control cohort on the same dates in the years 2017, 2018 and 2019 (control group, n=172). Thirty-day-mortality and one-year-mortality, orthopaedic complications, ASA grade, comorbidities, diagnosis and treatment, time to surgery and mean stay were measured. RESULTS: No significant differences were found in 30-day mortality (p=0.156; 9.7% compared to 4.7%) or in one-year mortality (p=0.47) between the pandemic group (21%) and the control one (16.9%). A decrease in surgical delay and mean stay was observed in the pandemic group, although without statistical significance. CONCLUSION: The State of Alarm modified the distribution of the type of hip fracture with a predominance of intracapsular fracture. Maintaining the same hospital management as prior to the pandemic period made it possible not to increase 30-day mortality and one-year mortality in patients with intracapsular hip fracture.

ABSTRACT

Alternate :The purpose of this work was to know the relationships between the non-compliance figures of seven restrictions imposed by social isolation due to Covid-19 (Behaviours Contrary to Coexistence, BCC) between March 16 and May 1, 2020, with the economic indicators of criminality, social network between 2015 and 2018, and contagions in 2020 in all 32 departments of Colombia and Bogota (n=33). The outcome was: a) a direct correlation between total rates of BCC and regional rates of crime against property, b) direct relations between more infringements by agglomerations and higher rate of accumulated infections by Covid-19, c) a greater negative emotional climate and a lower satisfaction with the police was associated with more infringements by agglomerations and the non-use of masks, d) a lower collective efficacy was associated with more violations due to unauthorized alcohol consumption, e) a greater communal coping was associated with fewer offenses due to alcohol consumption . Although the size of the correlations was moderate, the evidence supports the "broken window" and social disorganization theories.

ABSTRACT

In the context of the pandemic, States have enacted multiple measures that restrict rights and liberties. The right to protest has not been the exception, with States alluding to the dangers the virus poses to health in order to impose heavy restrictions on public gatherings. This article examines a number of judicial decisions from different jurisdictions, to show how courts call on governments to respect affected rights when reviewing the constitutionality of such measures. Even in times of pandemic, the article shows courts find that the proportionality of regulations may be judicially assessed. Although this line of reasoning may appear obvious —it is a standard globally resorted to review rights limitations—, it needs to be highlighted in times when fear, as history and our own recent jurisprudence show us, may lead to uncritically accept these restrictions. © 2021.
